A federal appeals court says singer R. Kelly was correctly sentenced to 20 years in prison on child sex convictions in Chicago. Jurors in 2022 convicted the Grammy Award-winning R&B singer on three charges of producing child porn and three charges of enticement of minors for sex. Kelly's attorney called the decision disappointing and says they will ask the U.S. Supreme Court to review Friday's decision by the Chicago-based 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Kelly is also serving a 30-year sentence imposed in New York for federal racketeering and sex trafficking convictions. He has separately appealed that sentence.
Officials say Egypt is sending a high-level delegation to Israel in the hope of reaching a cease-fire agreement with Hamas in Gaza. Lebanon’s militant Hezbollah group said its fighters fired anti-tank missiles and artillery shells at an Israeli military convoy in a disputed area along the border, killing an Israeli civilian. Hezbollah said that its fighters ambushed the convoy shortly late Thursday, destroying two vehicles. The Israeli military said the ambush wounded an Israeli civilian doing infrastructure work, and that he later died of his wounds. Low-intensity fighting along the Israel-Lebanon border has repeatedly threatened to boil over as Israel has targeted senior Hezbollah militants in recent months.

A former paramedic’s sentencing hearing in Colorado will cap months of trials over the 2019 death of Elijah McClain, who was stopped by police, put in a neck hold and injected with the powerful sedative ketamine. Friday’s sentence could carry up to three years in prison. Three of five Denver-area first responders prosecuted in the Black man’s death have been convicted. McClain’s name became a rallying cry in protests over racial injustice in policing that swept the U.S. His mother says justice has not yet been served. She says the two officers who were acquitted were complicit in her 23-year-old son’s killing and that they have escaped justice.
Stock market today: Alphabet and Microsoft push Wall Street toward its first winning week in a month
Alphabet and Microsoft are leading the U.S. stock market toward its first winning week in the last four. The S&P 500 rose 1.1% Friday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 166 points, and the Nasdaq composite gained 2.1%. Google's parent company jumped after breezing past analysts’ expectations for profit and announcing a dividend. Microsoft climbed after also topping forecasts. They helped offset a slide for Intel after it gave a forecast for profit that fell short of analysts' expectations. Treasury yields eased after a report on inflation for March came in close to expectations.
The defense’s cross-examination of former National Enquirer publisher David Pecker in Donald Trump’s hush money trial in New York has ended in his fourth day on the witness stand. Trump lawyer Emil Bove wrapped up his cross-examination Friday. Pecker says “I’ve been truthful, to the best of my recollection.” Bove earlier argued that Pecker’s testimony has been inconsistent with statements made to federal prosecutors in 2018. But Pecker stuck Friday to the story he has given in court.
